NEWARK, DE - Phil Martelli got to sample a job possibly more stressful than coaching when he served as a guest toll collector on I-95 in Delaware.
It was an innocent enough comment on a WIP Sports Talk radio program prior to the start of the 2004-2005 college basketball season. Saint Joseph's Phil Martelli, commenting on the rigors of coaching, stated he might look for an easier job... like toll collector.
DelDOT's Chief Traffic Engineer Don Weber, listening while driving to work, decided to respond and called the radio station. He challenged Martelli to try being a toll collector to appreciate the problems, and Martelli accepted the challenge - when the season was over.
Martelli took DelDOT up on the offer and collected tolls for 40 minutes. The coach joked with drivers telling them the tv cameras were there because they were trying to find the best driver on I-95.
He then spoke to the DelDOT staff as his appearance coincided with an employee appreciation day.
"I really enjoyed myself, but the most enjoyable part was the people. The people here were terrific and I definitely have a great appreciation for what they do day in and day out," said the coach.
