NORRISTOWN, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's baseball team let an early lead slip away as a six-run sixth inning powered Temple to a 9-6 victory in the final game of SJU's first home conference series.
Saint Joseph's (9-16, 2-4 Atlantic 10) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on three hits. Senior catcher Ken Pustizzi hit an RBI double down the left field line to bring home Brian Hartsell with the game's first run. Pustizzi came around to score on a single by senior Chris Cashman to give the Hawks an early two-run cushion.
Temple (13-9, 5-1 Atlantic 10) scored a single run in the top of the fourth to cut the lead in half on an RBI single by Mark Ortega.
The Hawks opened up a four-run lead in the fourth after loading the bases with nobody out. Jeremy Jakubowski hit a sacrifice fly to score Jereme Scott. Pustizzi scored on a wild pitch, and a David Valesente sacrifice fly brought home Cashman to extend the lead to 5-1.
The Owls would be heard from again in the sixth, scoring six times to go ahead, 7-5. Seven hits, including three doubles, led to the outburst. TU added another run in the seventh to take a three-run lead, and a Byron McKoy double in the top of the eighth put the Owls ahead by four.
Cashman singled in the bottom of the eighth and came around to score on a triple by Jakubowski to set the final margin.
