Nivins and Calathes Earn All-Big Five Honors

PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's Ahmad Nivins has been named to the Philadelphia All-Big Five First Team while teammate Pat Calathes was chosen to the All-Big Five Second Team.

Nivins, who was named the Hawks' Most Valuable Player this season, earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team honors. He led the Hawks in scoring and rebounding with career-best averages of 16.6 points and 7.5 rebounds. Also an NABC All-District selection, Nivins topped the Atlantic 10 in field goal percentage (63.1 percent). The 6-9 center scored in double figures in 26 games, while notching 20-plus points on eight occasions.

Calathes was named SJU's Most Improved Player in 2007 as he posted career-best numbers while earning selection to the All-Atlantic 10 Third Team. Calathes averaged 13.9 points and 7.1 rebounds, a drastic increase from his averages of 4.8 points and 3.5 rebounds from a year ago. The junior led the Hawks in free throw percentage (84.6) and set the school record this season with 38 consecutive free throws.

Joining Nivins on the first team are Dionte Christmas (Temple), Ibrahim Jaaber (Penn), Scottie Reynolds (Villanova), Curtis Sumpter (Villanova) and Mark Zoller (Penn).

The All-Big Five Second Team is comprised of Calathes, Darnell Harris (La Salle), Mike Nardi (Villanova), Dustin Salisbery (Temple), and Mark Tyndale (Temple).

The All-Big Five squads will be honored at the 62nd Annual Herb Good Basketball Club's Banquet on Monday, April 23 at Colleen's in Philadelphia.
