LAFAYETTE HANDS HAWKS FOURTH STRAIGHT LOSS, 11-4

EASTON, Pa. (4/22/03) - Saint Joseph's (12-23) mustered just five hits and Lafayette (12-16) scored seven runs over the first three innings and to roll to an 11-4 win over the Hawks in non-conference baseball at Metzgar Field. SJU struck for an unearned run in the first. Senior Mike Walls reached on a two-out error. Classmate John Kokol's single continued the mini rally and left runners at first and third. Walls came home when Lafayette catcher Matt Skellan threw down to second base to cut down Kokol who was attempting to steal. Walls scored before the Lafayette defense could tag out Kokol. Lafayette wasted no time rebounding from its 1-0 deficit, as the Leopards cranked out four runs in the home half of the first. A solo home run by freshman Ryan Stadanlick in the top of the second cut the Lafayette lead to 4-2. The Leopards seized control of the game in the bottom of the third, plating three runs to give Lafayette a 7-2 lead. St. Joe's scratched across two more runs to in the sixth inning to cut into the LC lead. With a runner aboard, junior Bill McCollum tripled off the centerfield wall. Walls kept the inning going with a single to score McCollum and make it 7-4. The Leopards tacked on four runs in their final two at-bats. to pull away for the 11-4 victory. Hawk freshman Jason Volker (1-3) was hit for the loss for the Hawks (12-23). He allowed eight runs (7 earned) on 12 hits over six innings. Sophomore Ryan Hoagey threw the final two innings, allowing three runs on three hits and three strikeouts. The Hawks will play a single nine inning game tomorrow against Villanova at Latshaw-McCarthy Field at 8:10 PM. The game will be aired on WPWA 1590-AM with Jim Havens.
