PHILADELPHIA - Sophomore Jason Hessler has been named to the first-ever Philadelphia Diamond Five baseball team in voting conducted by the city's head coaches. The right-handed pitcher turned in one of the most impressive seasons for a Hawks' hurler in school history topping the team in wins, starts, innings pitched and strikeouts.
His 15 starts rank as the second highest single season total in school history. His 82 strikeouts meanwhile stand third and his 88.2 innings pitched are the fourth most by a Hawk.
In the same voting, Villanova senior Jeremy Hunt (1B) and junior Kevin Mulvey (SP) were named the Diamond Five Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively. Temple freshman Jamie Abercrombie was named the Diamond Five Rookie of the Year and La Salle,s Lee Saverio was named the Coach of the Year.
Joining Hessler, Hunt and Mulvey on the All-Diamond Five team are La Salle's George Hudock (OF), Rich Prall (C), John Rickards (2B), and Dan Waters (SP); Penn's Joey Boaen (OF) and Doug Brown (RP); Temple,s Arshwin Asjes (SP), Dan Brady (3B) and Devon Swope (OF); and Villanova's Ryan Arcadia (SS), Kris Molloy (OF) and Craig Mirsky (DH).
