AMBLER, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's baseball team took a brief lead midway through, but it wasn't enough as the Temple Owls emerged victorious, 3-2, in 10 innings in Tuesday's contest at Skip Wilson Field. Adrian Perez had the game-winning single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th to win it for TU.
Saint Joseph's (11-15) got things started in the top of the fifth as Quinn Renner led off with a single. Three batters later, a walk to Brett Tiagwad put runners on first and second with two outs for Dewey Oriente, who reached on an error by second baseman Tony Jusino that allowed both Renner and Tiagwad to score and give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
Temple (4-24) knotted the game in the bottom half of the sixth, scoring on a two-out, bases-loaded single by Jean Carlos Diaz and a passed ball.
Solid pitching from both squads sent the game into extra innings where, in the bottom of the 10th, a pair of walks and a fielding error allowed the Owls to load the bases with one out. Perez then ended the game with a single to left field, scoring Jabair Khan with the winning run.
Chad Simendinger got the spot start for SJU and worked three innings, giving up one hit while walking three and striking out five. He walked two of the first three hitters he faced, but picked them both off to avoid early trouble. Temple's Tyler Horst gave up just two unearned runs in seven innings, scattering six hits while walking two and striking out five.
Adam Rivera worked three and two-thirds innings of one-hit relief, but was charged with the unearned run that ended the game, saddling him with the defeat. Ryan Thomas retired all three hitters he faced in the top of the 10th to get the win.
Tiagwad continued his recent hot streak, collecting three hits and a run scored on the day.
SJU will head to Newark, Del. on Wednesday for a tilt with Delaware. The game is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
