ST. BONAVENTURE, NY - A complete game, seven hitter by freshman Jason Hessler helped Saint Joseph's (13-31, 7-10 A-10) split an Atlantic 10 baseball doubleheader with St. Bonaventure (23-22, 7-13 A-10) at McGraw-Jennings Field. SJU took the opener behind Hessler, 4-1, but dropped game two 17-1.
In game one, the Hawks' Hessler kept the Bona offense in check, holding the Bonnies to seven hits and one run in a complete game win. Senior Nick Baldasari and sophomore Matt Godusky each had a couple of hits for the Hawks, which scored twice in the fourth and sixth innings to pick up the win.
Bona sophomore Mike Proctor took the loss despite only giving up one earned run in five innings.
In game two, the St. Bonaventure offense exploded for 17 runs on 21 hits. The Bonnies would put the game away in the sixth inning, scoring 10 runs on 11 hits.
SBU's Brian Pellegrini threw a complete game to earn the win and improved to 2-3 on the season, while Ryan Hoagey took the loss and dropped to 3-6. Godusky added two more hits for SJU, as did freshman Jeremy Jakubowski.
The two teams meet again Sunday at noon at McGraw-Jennings Field to complete the three-game series.
