CAMDEN, N.J. - As a strong wind blew out to right field, so too did three Fordham home run balls as the Rams defeated the Saint Joseph's baseball team, 19-3, on Saturday at Campbell's Field. Ram starter Max Krakowiak earned his fifth win of the season, working seven solid innings.
Fordham (17-30 overall, 11-9 Atlantic 10) scored in the top of the first inning for the second day in a row, and for the second day in a row it was catcher Chris Walker hitting a home run to provide the offense. His two-run shot over the right field wall off of starter Kyle Mullen gave the Rams a 2-0 lead.
Saint Joseph's (17-23 overall, 12-8 Atlantic 10) wasted no time in getting even, scoring twice in the bottom half of the first. Mike Coleman led off with a single and Brett Tiagwad was hit by the first pitch he saw to put two on with nobody out. The pair advanced on a wild pitch before scoring on a groundout by David Valesente and a single by Kevin Taylor.
The Rams went back on top in the second, scoring three more two-out runs and a throwing error and singles by Ryan Maghini, Brian Kownacki, and Ryan McCrann.
Walker added a second two-out, two-run home run off of Mullen in the fourth to expand the Ram lead to 7-2.
Fordham scored their first run of the series with less than two outs when Nick Martinez singled to right with one out in the top of the fifth to make the score 8-2.
P.J. Como led off the seventh with a triple and scored on a passed ball to push the lead to seven before the Hawks got one back in the bottom half of the frame when pinch hitter Ryan Kemp scored on a fielding error.
Things came unraveled for SJU in the top of the eighth as the Rams sent 13 hitters to the plate and scored eight runs on seven hits. Fordham added two more in the ninth on singles by Nick Martinez and Ryan David to close the scoring.
The teams will play the rubber game of the three-game set on Sunday night at 6:00 p.m.
