BOSTON, MA (11/25/03) - Delonte West scored 20 points and Tyrone Barley had 15 to lead #13 Saint Joseph's to a 71-56 win over Boston University at Case Gymnasium. The Hawks improve to 2-0 while BU drops to 0-2. Preseason All-America Jameer Nelson had another solid all-around game with 13 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and five steals. Barley hit a career-best five three-pointers in the contest, shooting 5-of-9 from long range. West was 8-for-14 from the field while adding five rebounds and four steals. Playing for the first time in 11 days, and in the first game since the season-opening win over then-#12 Gonzaga, the Hawks led from the start, but saw the home team close to within 24-22 with four minutes to play. The Hawks then scored 10 straight points and closed out the half with a 13-2 run to take a 37-24 lead at halftime. SJU forced 11 BU turnovers and Nelson keyed the first half with nine points and five assists. Barley shot 3-for-4 from three-point range and posted nine points before the intermission. A layup by West with 12:25 to play gave SJU its biggest lead of the game, 52-32. The Terriers whittled the deficit to 52-41 on five straight points by Pat Martin and a basket by Shaun Wynn, but that was the closest BU would come. Ryan Butt led Boston University with 20 points, with 14 of them coming in the first half. Chaz Carrr added 13 points. Rashad Bell had nine points and nine rebounds as BU outrebounded the Hawks, 38-28. SJU struggled from the foul line, making just 13 of 22 free throw attempts. Saint Joseph's, which moved up to 14th in the ESPN/USA Today poll, travels to Old Dominion on Saturday, November 29, before opening the home season at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse versus San Francisco on Tuesday, December 2.
